A three-vehicle crash at roughly 11 a.m. last Friday morning on Illinois Route 143 near the Wood River Creek Bridge, killed an 80 year old man and his wife from Bethalto, Illinois. Killed were Leonard M. McCormick and his wife Shirley. Mr. McCormick’s van was traveling eastbound when it collided with a white Silverado pickup truck that was headed westbound but was stopped and waiting to make a left turn across 143 onto an access road used by local fisherman on the levee side of the highway. The white pickup was reportedly pushed into the path of Mr. McCormick vehicle by a Honda CRV that rear ended the pickup. It was reported by the Alton Telegraph that although there is a break in the highway at that location, there is no left turn lane, so the pickup would have been stopped in the fast lane. It was reported that East Alton Police intend to seek traffic citations against the driver of the Honda, but the Department and Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the case.
Mr. McCormick was pronounced dead at the scene, his wife was airlifted to Barnes- Jewish hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The drivers of the other two vehicles were taken to local hospitals by ambulance to be treated for their injuries.
At approximately 1:10 a.m. on Saturday morning two Hillsboro men were tragically killed when their vehicle struck a tractor trailer which was attempting to back into a private drive on Old Highway M east of Lemay Ferry Road in Jefferson County. An additional passenger in the car was treated for moderate injuries.
Killed were Joseph Davis, 31 and Matthew Held, 57. Our sympathy goes out to all the families and friends of the deceased for their tragic loss.
