|Two Southeastern Missouri men were fatally injured in Perry County, Missouri on Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 near the intersection of Missouri Route 51 and Perry County road 706. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol Crash report, William R. Meyer, 62, of Poplar Bluff in Butler County, Missouri was driving his 1999 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan northbound on Missouri Route 51, when his vehicle, for reasons still unknown, crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a tractor trailer coming southbound head-on. The over the road truck was a 2003 Peterbilt driven by Willard Haberman, 46, of Sedgewickville in Bollinger County Missouri.John R. O’Connor, 61 also from Poplar Bluff was a passenger in Mr. Meyer’s car and was also killed. Both Mr. Meyer and Mr. O’Connor were pronounced dead at the scene at 4:30 in the afternoon by Perry County Coroner Herb Miller. Although both individuals were wearing seat belts, that was not enough protection in a head-on accident with the much larger and heavier semi. The family of both of the deceased were notified.
Mr. Haberman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Perry County Memorial Hospital. Both vehicles were listed as totaled and were towed from the scene. Highway 51 was closed for several hours while emergency personnel responded to the accident.
As a personal injury firm that is deeply involved with the people and injury issues of Southeast Missouri, our sympathies go out to all that were involved and affected by this tragic accident.
