At approximately 2:45 A.M. this morning a person was killed on eastbound I-70, just north of downtown at tenth street when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer truck.
The accident resulted in the closure of eastbound Interstate 70 until about 7:20 a.m. The accident reconstruction team for the St. Louis Police Department was called to the scene for investigation. Initial newspaper reports indicate that the driver of the pickup was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided with the semi.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was apparently the only witness to the crash and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Another fatality involving an 18-wheeler occurred earlier this week on the Chain of Rocks Bridge between Madison County Illinois and St. Louis County.
A man was attempting to push his stalled car Wednesday morning when he was struck and killed by the tractor trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer informed police that he swerved to avoid the disabled vehicle and his vehicle struck the center median of the bridge and caught fire.
According to reports, Police said they had received two reports around 4:47 a.m. regarding the stalled car on the bridge, but when the information was put out for two officers to respond, they were incorrectly told to go to I-70 and Riverview, instead of the correct stalled car location. Police dispatchers realized the mistake a few minutes later, when they got more calls at 4:52 a.m. which provided the correct location of the stalled vehicle. The man was hit by the tractor-trailer before police arrived. The driver of the truck was apparently uninjured.
