radiology: the use of x rays, MRI, CT and ultrasound scans in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

recuse: to disqualify oneself as a judge.

referred pain: pain which is experienced in an area of the body some distance away from the actual cause of pain.

relief: a legal remedy.

remand: to send a case back from an appellate court to the lower court from which it came, for further proceedings.

remittitur: the legal process by which an appellate court transfers to the lower court, proceedings before it, together with its decision for such further action and entry of judgment by the lower court as is required by the appellate decision.

reply: a plaintiff’s response to a defendant’s answer, when the defendant’s answer contains a counterclaim.

res: subject matter.

respondent: one who formally answers the allegations stated in a petition which has been filed with the court. Also known as a defendant in a civil action. More typically used at the appellant level.

rheumatoid arthritis: a chronic arthritic disease marked by stiffness and inflammation of the joints, loss of mobility and deformity.

RSI repetitive strain injury: repetitive strain injury or work related upper limb disorder is caused by repetitive movement as is sometimes required in manual or strenuous physical work.

rotator cuff injury: an injury to the anatomical structure which is composed of the tendons of four muscles that control rotation of the shoulder and of parts of the capsule of the shoulder joint.
