Organized February 19,1851 from New Madrid County, Pemiscot County is located along the Missisippi River in the agricultural “Bootheel” area of Southeast Missouri. The county is named for the local bayou taken from the Fox dialect pem-eskaw, meaning “liquid mud.” Population of the county is estimated at roughly around 20,000.

The county seat of Pemiscot is the city of Caruthersville. The first county seat was Gayoso, Missouri but because the Mississippi was eroding the land Gayoso was sitting on, the courthouse was moved to Caruthersville in 1899.

Interstate 55, Interstate 155, U.S. Route 61, U.S. Route 412, Route 84, and Route 164.

Braggadocio, Bragg City, Caruthersville, Cooter, Deering, Gobler, Hayti, Hayti Heights, Hayward, Holland, Homestown, North Wardell, Pascola, Peach Orchard, Steele, & Wardell.
