The county is named for the local bayou taken from the Fox dialect pem-eskaw, meaning “liquid mud.” Population of the county is estimated at roughly around 20,000.
The county seat of Pemiscot is the city of Caruthersville. The first county seat was Gayoso, Missouri but because the Mississippi was eroding the land Gayoso was sitting on, the courthouse was moved to Caruthersville in 1899.
