Defective Products, Injuries and Recalls - June 15, 2010

A few weeks ago we discussed in this blog the role of litigation in reducing the number of serious injuries and deaths in our society.  Defective and inherently dangerous products and machines are often eliminated through our American system of justice. Following are just a few examples of products that have been recalled recently because of lawsuits or the threat of lawsuits.

About 500 bandsaws imported from Grizzly Industrial were recalled last fall due to shock hazards to their users. According to the recall, some of the bandsaws do not have a grounding wire installed.

Approximately 216,000 OfficeMax task Chairs were recalled because of a fall hazard to users when the back and base post of the chair breaks while in use. Officemax had received 35 reports of breakage with 15 reports of injuries, including lacerations, contusions and concussions.

Roughly 98,000 portable dehumidifiers from LG Electronics were recalled because the power connector for the compressor could short circuit, creating both fire and burn dangers to consumers. LG had received at least 11 reports of arcing, heat, smoke and 4 fires that created smoke and water damage to the building in which the dehumidifier was operating. No one had yet suffered any burns or injuries by the time of the recall.

213,000 Play yards with Bassinets were recalled because of the risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation. The one piece metal bar supporting the floorboard of the bassinet attachment was able to come out of its fabric sleeve, creating a uneven sleeping surface which resulted in the infant suffocation risk.

About 16,000 Dive Rite Wings were recalled because the over pressure valve springs in the diving equipment could rust and fail allowing the buoyancy compensator devices to leak, posing a drowning hazard to divers.

 

Roughly 52,000 Homelite, Husky and Black max Brand generators have been recalled because the fuel gauge can leak excessive amounts of gasoline, posing a fire and serious burn hazard to consumers.
